Effect of [Dilantin] on glucose tolerance in patients with hypoglycemia. Stambaugh JE and Tucker D, Diabetes 23:679-683, 1974. Describes the successful treatment of 5 patients with hypoglycemia previously unresponsive to dietary treatment. Symptoms included chronic anxiety, lethargy, chills, nausea, sensory deficits and neurological complaints. These symptoms disappeared and clinical reversal of hypoglycemia was documented with 6-hour glucose tolerance tests and of insulin levels. Dilantin modulation the calcium channel, lowering intracellular calcium.
